Gum Disease

Gum disease: do you know how to avoid it? #CallYourHygienist

Graphic showing the progression of gum disease. Plaque builds up at the gumline, and travels down the tooth's root surface, creating a pocket between the gums and the tooth. The area becomes infected & inflamed, which then compromises the bone structure over time.

Gum disease is the inflammation of gum tissues due to bacteria and plaque at the gumline.  If left untreated, gum disease will progressively worse, ultimately leading to the deterioration of the soft tissues and supporting bone.  If caught and treated early enough, gum disease is reversible

Who’s Who in Dentistry?

We are frequently asked, “what’s the difference between hygienists and assistants?” and “why am I seeing the hygienist, not the dentist?”

Dentists, hygienists, and assistants all work together to provide comprehensive, quality dental care.  While their responsibilities are different, each plays an important role.

Keeping your mouth healthy is a big deal! That’s why we do thorough exams and discuss all your options with you.  We firmly believe that the most effective and valuable healthcare dollars you will ever spend will be on prevention!

To learn more about dental hygiene, head over to our Oral Hygiene Basics page.

Infographic describing basic differences between dentists, hygienists, & assistants. Dentists do restorative treatment and focus on teeth; hygienists clean the mouth and focus on the health of soft tissues; and assistants help the dentist with procedures and focus on patient comfort.
